As JCB stated that recently imposed tariffs will have an immediate impact on its operations, the company plans to quadruple the size of a new factory that is presently being built in Texas.
For almost a century, JCB has been producing in the United States. About 1,000 people are employed at its current manufacturing facility in Savannah, Georgia, which has been in operation for 25 years. After realising the need to produce even more machines in North America, JCB purchased 400 acres of land in San Antonio last year.
With ambitions to double its size to one million square feet, JCB has updated its initial design for a factory that would have been 500,000 square feet. Up to 1,500 workers will be employed by the new $500 million plant when it begins operations the following year.
In a statement, chairman Anthony Bamford said, “JCB has been in business for 80 years this year and we are well accustomed to change.” “President Trump has inspired us to consider how we can produce even more products in the USA, which has been a significant market for JCB since we sold our first machine there in 1964. The USA is the largest market for construction equipment in the world.”
Graeme Macdonald, CEO, said:
“The tariffs’ implementation will have a big effect on our business in the near future. Our proposed facility in San Antonio, however, will lessen the effects over the medium run. We appreciate that the tax is just 10%, and we hope that the UK government will wrap up trade deal negotiations in the days and weeks ahead.
