During this week’s XCMG International Customer Festival in Xuzhou, Chinese mining equipment giant XCMG formally unveiled the XES55 ultra-class electric rope shovel, which it claims represents yet another significant advancement for the country’s upscale open-pit mining equipment sector.
The XES55’s release shows XCMG’s ongoing growth into the worldwide market for ultra-large mining excavation equipment after the XES35 was introduced in 2023.

The XES55 has a nominal 55 m³ bucket capacity and is designed for large-scale open-pit coal, iron ore, and non-ferrous metal mining operations. According to XCMG, it is meant for high-efficiency loading applications under demanding mining conditions. The device uses an electric drive system and sophisticated intelligent control technologies to increase operational reliability, decrease energy consumption, and boost productivity.
The XES55 is built to match 290-360 t class haul trucks with its 55 m³ class payload capability. It can achieve single-pass loading efficiencies appropriate for large coal, iron ore, and copper mining operations across the globe.
According to XCMG, the Komatsu P&H 4100XPC electric rope shovel or Cat 7495 electric rope shovel are typically regarded as being comparable to the XES55 in terms of international market positioning. Both versions are part of the 55 m³ ultra-class electric shovel class, which is frequently employed in big open-pit mines worldwide.
The XES55’s introduction demonstrates XCMG’s expanding capacity to create ultra-large mining machinery, which “further strengthens its product portfolio covering mining trucks, hydraulic excavators, electric rope shovels, and new-energy mining solutions.”
“Industry observers believe the release of the XES55 represents an important step in breaking the long-standing dominance of North American OEMs in the ultra-class electric shovel market,” continues XCMG. The XES55 is anticipated to draw interest from significant mining projects in South America, Australia, Central Asia, and other international mining regions as global mining operations continue to shift toward larger-scale, low-carbon, and intelligent production systems.
However, XCMG is not the only Chinese player in this market; Taiyuan Heavy Industry (TYHI), a long-standing supplier, has its own 55 m³ model, the WK-55, which has been successfully exported, including to BHP’s Cerro Colorado copper mine in Chile and Anglo Platinum’s (now Valterra Platinum) Mogalakwena platinum mine in South Africa.
From the WK-55, TYHI also offers smaller and larger sizes, such as the WK-4D, WK-12C, WK-20, WK-27A, WK-35, and WK-75. The WK-75, with a 75 m³ bucket, is the largest rope shovel ever produced (even larger than the Komatsu P&H 4800XPC, which has a bucket capacity of up to 70 m³), but it is only available at the Datang Xilinhaote Coal Mine in Inner Mongolia.
