Caterpillar opened its Black Hills Engineering Design Center in Rapid City, South Dakota.
According to the corporation, the 17,000-square-foot facility acts as a hub for Caterpillar teams throughout the world working on machines, engines, electrification, and autonomy. At the facility, teams employ extended reality and digital prototypes to collaborate across continents, detect difficulties earlier, and progress faster, according to Cat, reducing the need for costly builds. The facility employs approximately 100 people, combining engineering, animation, design, and data visualization, and the number is still expanding.
Caterpillar claims the Rapid City team contributes to its global business by building tools and technology that enable teams to create faster, make better decisions, and deliver solutions to clients more effectively. The investment also expands the company’s long-standing relationship with the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, bolstering its talent and innovation pipeline.
