In order to address the increasing lack of qualified workers in the road construction industry, Kwame Governs Agbodza, the Minister for Roads and Highways, has announced plans for the Ministry to finance the training of heavy equipment operators.
The initiative’s goal, according to the Minister, is to give contractors a steady supply of skilled operators to increase uniformity and productivity on project sites throughout the nation.
Speaking to the media on Monday, May 11, 2026, during the nationwide road inspection tour, the Minister clarified that while some contractors think trainees might pick up the essential skills in a month, the training program is anticipated to span roughly two months.
Some contractors have expressed dissatisfaction over their lack of access to competent labor. This is good since it gives people a chance to get employment.
Therefore, we have instructed the government to collaborate with the agencies to promptly publicize the details that are unavailable and the crash course that they are undergoing. “We’ll pay for the training ourselves,” he declared.
“They will be able to get the skills the contractors need to get them to work within two months,” the minister went on.
According to him, the program would concentrate on educating operators for heavy machines used in road building, such as rollers and excavators.
The Minister pointed out that competent personnel frequently leave projects after receiving better offers elsewhere, making it difficult for contractors to keep them on board.
Rather than letting contractors fight fiercely over a small workforce, he believes that the long-term solution is to increase the number of skilled operators available in the nation.
