In the Komatsu PC lineup, the nearly two million-pound monster has the biggest bucket capacity, the longest reach, and the greatest digging power.
Following the arrival of its first model in Canada last year, Komatsu’s largest hydraulic excavator, the PC9000-12, has been introduced on the global market, including North America.
In the Komatsu PC lineup, the nearly two million-pound monster has the biggest bucket capacity, the longest reach, and the greatest digging power. According to the business, it can load a 400-ton Komatsu 980E rigid-frame dump truck in less than three minutes with a payload of more than 80 tons every pass. In May 2025, Suncor’s oil sands mine in Alberta deployed the first PC9000. It was constructed by Komatsu in Germany and transported in 31 sections across 8,700 miles by road, river, and ocean to Canadian Komatsu distributor SMS Equipment. The excavator’s assembly at the mine took six weeks.
Dennis Chmielewski, executive vice president of mining at SMS Equipment, states, “Our team has already gained valuable hands-on experience with the PC9000, and we’re looking forward to helping customers successfully integrate the machine into their operations to get the most out of its capabilities.”

The PC8000, which was once Komatsu’s biggest hydraulic excavator, served as the model for the PC9000. Compared to the PC8000, the PC9000 weighs roughly 145 tons more.
Here are some further details about the large digger, which can be set up as a backhoe or front shovel.
